open bars, yay or nay? [Dec. 24th, 2009|09:13 pm]

newyorkers

[wakemexsoftly]
my friends and i all turned 21 earlier this year, so this is the first new year's eve that we can drink legally.

my friends all want to buy tickets to a bar's open bar party. i'd rather just stay in our dorm room and get trashed there, instead of going out, so. . .

give it to me straight: are these parties really worth it?

for what it's worth, we live in the east village, so there are a ton of bars around, but they're all lured by the idea of "unlimited booze".

thanks!

For those of you who have lived here for a while, have you found a neighborhood that you love living in? How long did it take you to find it? Where did you live before that didn't work for you?

7:50 am flight; what time should I get there? [Dec. 23rd, 2009|04:30 pm]

newyorkers

[aspureasskies]
JFK- Tomorrow I have a flight departing at 7:50 in the morning, and I wanted some advice as to when I should get there, being Christmas Eve and all. I don't want to be sitting in the waiting area for hours, but I would like to have enough time to get through security and *possibly* grab a cup of coffee before I board. I would like a realistic estimate of how much time I should allot myself. Suggestions are much appreciated.

Microbrewies [Dec. 23rd, 2009|01:18 pm]

Very last minute gift

Happy Holidays!

I wanted to get a gift for my boss for Christmas. Alcohol seems to be an appropriate gift, but he only drinks beer from Microbreweries in his area of New Jersey. Are there any microbreweries in the city where I can buy him a gift card for a beer tasting or sample beers?

Thank you for any help.

From Brooklyn to LGA [Dec. 21st, 2009|06:44 pm]

newyorkers

[welling1]
Sorry for this annoying "best way to get there from here" posts, but I'm just wondering what others think, especially since I normally fly out of JFK. I'm a little concerned also because it's the 24th everything might be a mad-house.

I'm in Brooklyn (closest subway the Prospect Ave stop - R train) and have a flight out of LGA on the 24th at 2 pm. What is the cheapest (and somewhat least stressful) why to get there? I've read that it's possible to get the N to Astoria and then hop on a bus. Or would I be better off to just go to Grand Central or Port Authority and get on one of those shuttle buses for like $10? I'll only have a backpack and one other small-ish suitcase.

NYE for nondrinking tourists [Dec. 21st, 2009|06:16 pm]

newyorkers

[trixiebella]
ha, still reading after that subject line? =)

two of my college friends (they're married to each other) will be staying in my apartment in brooklyn and celebrating the new year......while i'm out of town. so, i'm not even going to see them. they're in their mid 20s but not big drinkers at all. we're trying to think of fun things for them to do on their own on new years eve that doesn't focus heavily on drinking. the usual bar hopping (my NYE activity of choice) doesn't really appeal to them. they're big theatre nerds, but pretty agreeable and usually up for just about anything.

and oh yeah, they don't want to do the times square thing. i know this is an obnoxious post. however, i just want to show my friends a good time even though i won't be around to do it personally.

anyone have any fun suggestions?

Wanted: hand-knitted men's wool socks!! [Dec. 21st, 2009|11:49 am]

[0nce]
Hello everyone:

I am looking for a last-minute holiday gift for a friend of mine -- handmade, big, warm, cozy, knit wool socks -- no packaged nonsense...

Are there any stores in Manhattan or Brooklyn you guys could recommend that sell unused hand-made knit stuff?

Thanks so much!!

Snow newbie... [Dec. 21st, 2009|11:16 am]

newyorkers

[iheartsarahduh]
So, there's a store by my house that has been closed since way before I moved in to the neighborhood. They are a corner store, and on my street on the way to the train station, it's my house, another house, a store, and then this store. Right after this store are the steps to the train station.

Now, who is responsible for shoveling/icing this area of sidewalk? The people who currently own the property, the MTA, the store next door (they're in the same building) or the city? I am on crutches right now and have to walk on my splint very painfully to get to the train because the walk is still covered in snow and ice which means my splint gets wet and I don't particularly enjoy that. :(

Thanks for your help!

Oh, and for the lulz:

I am looking for a SOMEWHAT CHEAP salon that isn't afraid to do crazy shit to people's hair. For instance, if I were like, I WANT CHUNKS & RANDOM LOCKS OF WHITE HAIR INTEGRATED INTO MY BLACK HAIR, WITH LAYERS. Or like funky coloring projects (but mostly looking for someone that really knows how to get dark hair WHITE).

THANKS a bunch, and happy holidays!!

Doormen and Christmas [Dec. 20th, 2009|08:09 pm]

newyorkers

[megglethemuggle]
So, this is my first year moving into a doorman building, and I have some questions about Christmas gifts.

The building gave us--without us asking--a list of all the employees in the building. 3 resident managers, 3 handymen, 6 porters, and 8 concierges.

We're semi-broke college students living in this building because it's not finished so we got 2 months rent free. (The building's completion is way behind schedule, but that's another story)

Are we really each going to have to spend around $200? My boyfriend's mom said that they usually give more than that to each of their doormen, but they've been there for much longer and have far fewer building employees.

We've only been here 4 months, and I don't even know all of their names. I have a list of their names, but I don't know which faces to put them to so I don't even know how I would hand out these gifts.

Could any of you share experiences or advice? I'd really appreciate it. This kind of shit really stirs up my social anxiety.

What ended up happening to last year's fellows? [Dec. 20th, 2009|04:50 pm]

Hi everyone!

From reading older entries on this forum and I've what read in a few Google searches it sounds like the fellows program has run into some serious problems in the last few years--specifically recruiting wide eyed eager folks to get to come on board only to have the school system turn around and say thanks but no thanks to the newly minted fellows when it comes to actual teaching jobs.

I've read about how in the previous year (two groups ago) there was big stink because people were recruited into the program only to then be left without a position... (slightly ironic given that the NYCTF marketing materials imply a desperate need for teachers in NYC when the NYC school system is complaining that it has more teachers than it has teaching positions).  I assume that there is an issue of subject mix here, but that still didn't stop the system from placing a ban on new hires earlier in the year.

The story told by the older posts on this site sounded quite crazy leading up to the start of summer training and a hiring freeze placed against new candidates such as new NYCTF fellows, but then after that nobody posted anything.

As someone very interested in the program, I'd like to know what ended up happening with this latest group of new fellows?  Were you able to get teaching positions (I've read the Department of Education allowed a limited number of 'exceptions' to the hiring freeze)?  If not, are you being paid and/or still working in NYC schools?

Thanks!

Hello New Yorkers!

What are you doing for New Year's Eve?! I know it's hard to figure out which events are going to be cool and which are going to suck (and, frankly, who wants to wind up in a cab at midnight trying to find the right party?), so what I have for you here is a nice little edited list of great NYE events, tickets available on a first-come, first-served basis:

http://saranewyears2010.com/

The event at the Hotel on Rivington is supposed to be especially hot--everyone from Bloc Group (the guys who organize all these events) is going to be there.

Happy New Year's!!

Love,
Sara

Hey did anyone apply to Urban Teaching Residencies along with the NYCTF application?
I did. Havent gotten a response to UTR yet. But, when I went to UTR seminar they said something along the lines, "Make sure you make it known you're applying to UTR and not NYCTF." I was afraid to ask, but I actually want to be considered for both.
